The Key Stage 2 Maths SAT test results

The Key Stage 2 Maths SAT test results are beginning to hit schools. Some will be happy and some will be disappointed. The debate is still open as to whether this is a test of individual children’s ability or of the school’s ability to teach. The levels were always rather dodgy, with the average 11 year old meant to be achieving a level 4, which is less than one level’s progress a year, but they have now brought in grades between levels! Madness! Don’t take the results too seriously.

In year 3 shape the main new 3D shape to be able to recognise and describe is the prism. A prism is a shape that has the same cross section and the same size throughout its length. Some shapes, such as cones and square based pyramids have the same shape throughout their length (ie circle and square respectively) but they are not prisms because the size of the circle or square changes as you move from one end to the other.
