Something you don’t find in most maths books, nevertheless very important. Helping children to realise that a number sentence such as 3 + 4 = 7 can have meaning in the real world as a practical event.
A typical (but rather dull) sentence might be:
“I have three blue pens and 4 red pens. I have seven pens in total.
Most of the time these activities can be answered orally and children can become quite creative – encourage imaginations! The page above is just a starter idea and you can easily create similar pages either on a computer screen or on paper. As children improve their reading and writing they can move on to writing simple number story sentences.
