Maths Game: Cross number 1

This is the first in a little series of fun maths games called cross numbers. Just like a crossword but with numbers. This first cross number is addition only, using mainly 2-digit numbers.

Another in our series of fun counting games with totals up to 5. Have you tried counting cows and goats? Why not try counting the monkeys? The more young children do this type of activity the more confident they will become with number. After a while, rather than counting each monkey they will begin to see patterns and instantly recognise that there are 3 or 4 etc.

Had enough of counting cows? Try some goats! Have a listen to our happy banjo playing goat when you finish!

Really good practice at counting up to 5. Young children can not get too much practice with this. They may well use their fingers to help and count out loud, but after a time they will begin to count in their heads. Adults can often glimpse at a picture to see how many there are, almost without counting – don’t expect this of 5 year olds!

Here is a great little free maths game for younger children (or the young at heart) to practice counting up to 5.

Watch out for mooing cows and there is a great black and white picture of Farmer Giles and his cows to print out and colour.
