Two worksheets here for rounding larger numbers, either to the nearest 1 000 or the nearest 10 000. Being able to round easily is important when estimating an answer and before using a calculator to ensure that the answer displayed on the screen is sensible.
Rounding numbers to the nearest 1 000
When rounding to the nearest 1 000 the key figure is the hundreds digit. If the hundreds digit is 5 or above, round up. If it is below 5, round down.
eg 2 750 is 3 000 to the nearest 1 000.
2 199 is 2 000 to the nearest 1 000.
Rounding numbers to the nearest 10 000
When rounding to the nearest 10 000 the key figure is the thousands digit. If the thousands digit is 5 or above, round up. If it is below 5, round down.
eg 29 750 is 30 000 to the nearest 10 000.
24 199 is 20 000 to the nearest 10 000.
