News: More male teachers needed in schools

Well it was only a short while ago when I mentioned a piece of research which suggested it was not necessary to have male teachers in primary school. Yes, you’ve guessed it, another survey (the Yougov survey) recommends more men should be teaching in our primary schools. They say that it leads to better behaved boys.

At present only 16% of teachers are men, and if you add in the thousands of female teaching assistants I imagine this percentage becomes even lower. One in twelve children are never taught by a male teacher.

So, the Training and Development Agency, responsible for teacher recruitment, wants to see more men applying to give a more balanced workforce. I agree, all schools should have both male and female teachers providing good role models for both sexes.
