Learning ‘times tables’ is absolutely essential if children are going to move on and be proficient with multiplication, division and all their maths at Secondary/High school. make sure that the tables are said out loud in full, not just the answers.

Once ‘tables’ have been learned they can be used for other mental methods eg multiplying by 20 or 30.
