These are about as hard as you get working in your head and jottings on paper may be needed to do them. Look back at earlier year groups to see the different strategies that can be used. The strategies are the same but the numbers are bigger.

When looking at adding three small numbers there are several strategies which can be employed. Usually it is better to start with the largest number, rather than the first number.

Two worksheets to help children with addition of two 2-digit numbers. Once knowledge of addition of single digits is secure this can be applied to 2-digit numbers, starting with adding teens.
In year 2 children will continue to develop their understanding of addition, beginning to work with larger numbers, but keep them below 100. Indeed, quite a lot of children will not be ready for dealing with 2-digit numbers. Don’t introduce larger numbers until they are really confident with single digit addition.
